This Privacy Policy supersedes and replaces all previous versions.
1. Introduction
Welcome to Starlog ("the App"), a business inventory and sales tracking tool developed and published by Starneel Productions LLC ("we," "us," or "our"). This Privacy Policy explains what information the App collects, how it is used and stored, and the choices you have. By downloading or using the App, you agree to the terms of this Privacy Policy.
Starlog now offers an optional account and cloud sync feature, powered by Google Firebase, that lets you back up your business data and access it from multiple devices (including a companion web app). Whether and how much information is collected depends on whether you choose to create an account, as described below.
2. Information We Collect
2.1 Account Information
If you choose to create an account (required to use cloud sync), we collect:
- Your email address, used to authenticate you via Firebase Authentication (email/password sign-in).
- A unique account identifier (User ID) generated by Firebase to associate your data with your account.
Creating an account is optional. If you do not sign in, the App functions using local, on-device storage only, as described in Section 3.1, and none of the cloud-related information in this section is collected.
2.2 Business Data (When Signed In)
If you sign in and enable cloud sync, the following business data — the same categories previously stored only on your device — is also transmitted to and stored in our cloud database so it can be synced across your devices:
- Inventory Data: item names, categories, costs, prices, stock levels, and barcodes.
- Sales Records: sales history, quantities, earnings, profits, and optional buyer names.
- Shop Settings: your shop name and tax rate.
If you do not sign in, this data remains local to your device only, as it did previously.
2.3 Subscription & Payment Information
Removing ads and unlocking cloud sync requires an optional "Pro" subscription, purchased through one of two channels:
- Google Play Billing (mobile app): Google processes the transaction. We do not receive or store your payment card details. We do receive and store a subscription status (active, expired, or cancelled), the subscription source, and an expiration date, which our server verifies directly with Google Play using your purchase token.
- Stripe (companion web app): Stripe processes the transaction and collects your payment card details and email address directly; we never see or store your card information. We store the Stripe-assigned customer ID and your subscription status so we can keep your Pro access up to date.
2.4 Advertising Identifiers (Free Tier)
If you use the free, ad-supported tier, the App displays advertisements through Google AdMob. To serve and measure ads, the Google Mobile Ads SDK automatically collects and transmits certain information over the internet, including your device's Advertising ID (GAID), device model and OS version, and ad interaction data (impressions and clicks). This is described further in Section 6.
2.5 Camera Access
The App requests camera access to let you scan product barcodes. Camera images are processed on your device only to detect a barcode value; images themselves are not saved or transmitted. The resulting barcode value is stored as part of the relevant inventory item, subject to Sections 2.2 and 3, like any other inventory field.
3. How We Store Your Data
3.1 Local Device Storage
Regardless of whether you have an account, a local copy of your inventory, sales, and settings data is kept on your device using local app storage, so the App continues to work offline.
3.2 Cloud Storage (Signed-In Users)
If you sign in, your business data (Section 2.2) and account information (Section 2.1) are also stored in Google Firebase / Cloud Firestore, a cloud database operated by Google on our behalf. Data is organized per account and is only readable and writable by your authenticated account, enforced by server-side security rules. Data in transit is encrypted using industry-standard protocols (HTTPS/TLS).
4. How We Use Your Information
We use the information described above to:
- Provide core App functionality, including local record-keeping and, for signed-in users, cross-device sync of inventory, sales, and settings.
- Authenticate your account and keep your data associated with the correct account.
- Verify and manage your Pro subscription status across devices and platforms.
- Display and measure advertisements for free-tier users.
- Maintain the security and integrity of the App and its backend services.
We do not sell your personal or business information, and we do not use your inventory or sales data for advertising purposes.
5. Third-Party Service Providers
We share information with the following service providers, each of which processes information under its own privacy policy:
- Google Firebase — authentication and cloud database hosting for signed-in accounts.
- Google Play Billing — processes mobile subscription purchases.
- Stripe — processes web subscription purchases and payment details (see Stripe's privacy policy at https://stripe.com/privacy).
- Google AdMob — serves advertisements to free-tier users (see Section 6).
6. Advertising & Third-Party Data Collection (Google AdMob)
Free-tier use of the App displays advertisements provided by Google AdMob (Google LLC). To serve personalized ads and provide analytics, the Google Mobile Ads SDK automatically collects and shares certain identifiers over the internet, including:
- Your device's Advertising ID (GAID) for ad targeting.
- Device analytics, including device model, OS version, and screen size.
- App interaction data, such as ad impressions and clicks.
This data is encrypted in transit and processed by Google LLC in accordance with Google's Privacy Policy (https://policies.google.com/privacy). Pro subscribers do not see ads and this data is not collected for them.
7. Opting Out of Targeted Ads
You can manage or completely turn off personalized advertising and tracking at any time through your Android device settings via: Settings > Google > Ads > Opt out of Ads Personalization (or Reset Advertising ID).
8. Device Permissions
- Internet Access: required to load advertisements (free tier) and to sync data with our cloud database and payment providers (signed-in / Pro users).
- Camera: required to scan barcodes, as described in Section 2.5.
- Billing: uses Google Play's native billing system to process subscription purchases. We do not process or store payment card information.
- Advertising ID: used by Google AdMob for free-tier users, as described in Section 6.
9. Data Retention & Account Deletion
If you never create an account, uninstalling the App permanently removes all locally stored data from your device, as before.
If you have an account, uninstalling the App removes the local copy from that device but does not delete your data from our cloud database, since it remains available to sync to your other devices. To delete your account and all associated cloud data (inventory, sales, settings, and subscription records), contact us at the email address in Section 13, and we will process your request within a reasonable time. You may also use this site's Data Deletion Request page.
10. International Data Transfers
Our cloud infrastructure is provided by Google Firebase and may store or process data in countries other than your own. By using the cloud sync feature, you acknowledge that your information may be transferred to and processed in such locations, which may have different data protection laws than your jurisdiction.
11. Age Restrictions and Target Audience
The App is strictly intended for use by adults aged 18 and older. It is not directed at, designed for, or marketed to children or minors under the age of 18. We do not knowingly collect or track data from anyone under 18.
12. Your Rights & Security
You retain control over your business data. If you use the App without an account, your data never leaves your device and is protected by your device's own security features. If you use cloud sync, your data is protected by Firebase's server-side security rules, which restrict access to your authenticated account, and by encryption in transit. You may request access to, correction of, or deletion of your account data at any time by contacting us.
13. Changes to This Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time, for example as we add new features. We will update the Effective Date above when changes are made, and encourage you to review this policy periodically.
